Supporting children under the age of five. Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity supports children under the age of five with cerebral palsy and other motor learning impairments, helping them to make the best possible start in life, and providing their families with the skills to continue their development at home. |
Children with cerebral palsy often struggle to learn fundamental skills and face extra challenges because of their disabilities. Along with other motor learning impairments, it leaves these children with physical impairments that affect their body movement, muscle control, reflexes, posture, and balance. Many of our children have additional needs such as visual and hearing impairments, speech and language difficulties and issues with eating, drinking, digestion and respiration. They are often excluded from everyday activities in their communities, limiting the opportunities for socialisation with children of their own age. |
Our services include physiotherapy, conductive education, speech and language, aqua therapy, music therapy and family outreach home play sessions. All services focus on parents and children working together in a supportive environment with the aim of improving a child’s physical, social, and emotional skills. This support positively impacts the long-term wellbeing of not only the child but their whole family. Our services are free and available all year round but we receive no statutory funding so we rely on the generosity of our community, corporate partners and grant funders. Families travel from all over the South East to access our services. Tracey Shaw said ‘I am so proud to have joined this dedicated at team at Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity who support over 80 children a week. We hugely value our membership of BHBPA and look forward to building relationships with other members who might be interested in corporate volunteering opportunities, skills sharing or fundraising events.’ |
